Arsenal have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of England international Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for £51 million.
The 28-year-old defender has agreed to a four-year contract with the Premier League champions, with an option to extend his stay for another season. Aston Villa could also receive an additional £4 million in performance-related add-ons.
Konsa becomes one of Arsenal’s latest major signings as manager Mikel Arteta continues to build a squad capable of competing for major honours in the new season.
Speaking after completing the move, Konsa expressed his excitement about joining Arsenal, saying he was determined to continue winning at his new club.
The England defender joined Aston Villa from Brentford in July 2019 and went on to make 286 appearances for the club, establishing himself as one of the league’s reliable defenders.
His versatility was reportedly a major factor behind Arsenal’s decision to pursue the transfer, with Konsa capable of playing both centre-back and right-back.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta described the defender as a high-quality player, praising his athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence.
Berta said Konsa’s ability to operate in different defensive positions would provide Arteta with greater tactical flexibility while maintaining the club’s defensive standards.
Arsenal had previously explored the possibility of signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarrell Quansah, but eventually reached an agreement with Villa for Konsa after weeks of negotiations.
The transfer represents a fresh chapter in Konsa’s career, with the defender now expected to play an important role as Arsenal pursue domestic and European success.
