The Federal Government has approved Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday to enable Nigerians celebrate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
The minister called on Muslims and other Nigerians to use the occasion as an opportunity to promote peace, unity, compassion and peaceful coexistence across the country.
Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to reflect on the teachings and values associated with the life of Prophet Muhammad, particularly humility, service to humanity and concern for others.
He said the celebration should also reinforce the need for Nigerians to work together in strengthening national unity and cohesion.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said.
He further appealed to Nigerians to celebrate responsibly and respect one another, while assuring citizens that the Federal Government remained committed to protecting lives and property.
Tunji-Ojo also stressed that maintaining peace and security was a collective responsibility that required the cooperation of all Nigerians.
The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora and wished them a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
