The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, has called for an investigation into an alleged attempt by suspected political thugs to disrupt his campaign activities.
Iyovwaye alleged that he and his supporters were prevented from accessing a community town hall during a political visit, accusing members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of sponsoring the attack.
The NDC candidate, however, commended his supporters for remaining peaceful despite what he described as provocation, noting that their restraint prevented the situation from escalating into violence.
He urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to ensure that all political parties are allowed to campaign freely and that those responsible for the alleged incident are brought to justice.
According to Iyovwaye, political intimidation and violence have no place in a democratic society, stressing that his party remains committed to peaceful and lawful political engagement.
He reiterated the NDC’s pledge to provide what it described as a credible alternative for Delta State through good governance and people-centred leadership, insisting that the party would not be deterred by acts of intimidation.
The APC had yet to react to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
