Nigerian-American striker Folarin Balogun continued his red-hot form at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, clinching his second consecutive Man of the Match award as the United States Men’s National Team defeated Australia 2–0 to advance to the knockout stage.
The latest accolade came at the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, where Balogun’s relentless pressing and intelligent movement unsettled Australia’s defence. His pressure forced defender Cameron Burgess into an own goal in the 11th minute for the opening strike.
Beyond the forced error, Balogun’s hold-up play and link-up with teammates helped the co-hosts dominate possession and dictate tempo for long stretches. His work rate off the ball created space even in the absence of injured star Christian Pulisic.
The performance marked another milestone for the New York-born forward. It followed his explosive World Cup debut against Paraguay, where he scored twice in a 4–1 rout and became the first American to net a brace at the tournament since 1930.
That brace against Paraguay earned Balogun his first Man of the Match award, making him the first US player to claim the honour on debut in 96 years. He has now backed it up with another dominant display against Australia.
Born in New York to Nigerian parents and raised in England, Balogun was eligible to represent England, Nigeria and the United States internationally. He opted for the USMNT, a decision that is now paying dividends on the world stage.
His impact has gone beyond goals. Coaches and analysts have praised Balogun’s tactical discipline, ability to stretch defences, and willingness to press from the front. Those qualities have made him central to Gregg Berhalter’s attacking setup.
With two wins from two group games, the United States have secured early qualification for the knockout rounds. Balogun’s form will be crucial as the co-hosts aim to make a deep run in a World Cup staged across the US, Mexico and Canada.
The 22-year-old striker will now turn attention to the round of 16, where the USMNT will face tougher opposition. If his current form continues, Balogun could become the face of America’s World Cup campaign and an inspiration for Nigerian-American footballers worldwide.
