The 2026 National Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students has elected Comrade Oladimeji Uthman, popularly known as “Dan Fodio”, as the new Secretary General of NANS National Headquarters.
The election took place between 22 and 25 May 2026 at Old Parade Ground, FCT Abuja, where delegates from institutions across Nigeria converged to choose a new National Executive Council for the apex students’ body.
Comrade Dan Fodio, described as a tested administrator and seasoned unionist, won alongside other NEC members to form what the convention chairman called a purposeful, progressive, and people-oriented administration.
His track record includes serving as National Clerk of the NANS Senate Secretariat and former Deputy Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D. The convention said his emergence reflects years of sacrifice, commitment, and service to Nigerian students.
In his post-election address, the new Secretary General pledged to run a Secretariat built on inclusivity, transparency, administrative excellence, and the protection of students’ interests nationwide.
The new leadership said it will prioritise educational dignity, students’ empowerment, and institutional accountability, while calling on all officials to embrace unity and collective responsibility for what it termed the “Unassailable Blessed Era”.
Dan Fodio stressed that the success of the administration would depend on shared commitment to restoring confidence, strengthening structures, and delivering meaningful representation at all levels.
He also raised alarm over the abduction of students in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, noting that the victims have spent 15 days in captivity. He criticised the lack of urgency from authorities and announced that NANS will mobilise to Oyo to intensify advocacy and demand accountability.
Stakeholders, comrades, and the entire Nigerian students’ community have been urged to support the new leadership as it begins the task of steering NANS towards a stronger, more responsive, and more impactful chapter of students’ governance.
