Former Defence Minister, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma and business mogul Aliko Dangote donated a combined N3.5 billion at the public presentation of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon’s autobiography in Abuja on Tuesday.
The event, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, drew political leaders, business executives, and dignitaries from across the country. The book, titled My Life of Duty and Allegiance, runs to 859 pages.
Danjuma led the donations with a pledge of N3 billion, while Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, contributed N500 million. Both men were recognized for their longstanding ties to Gowon and their support for national initiatives.
President of BUA Group, Abdul-Samad Rabiu, also participated by purchasing copies of the autobiography worth N25 million. Organizers said proceeds from the launch would support causes aligned with Gowon’s legacy of public service.
The autobiography, subtitled “No Going Back,” covers Gowon’s early life, military career, and tenure as head of state during the Nigerian Civil War. It is positioned as a historical account aimed at correcting misconceptions and filling gaps in public narratives.
Speaking at the launch, Gowon said he hoped the book would provide clarity on decisions made during his administration. He reiterated his belief that Nigeria would remain united despite its current challenges.
The gathering underscored the influence of both military and business elites in preserving and documenting Nigeria’s post-independence history. Several speakers praised Gowon’s role in keeping the country together during a turbulent period.
Guests at the event included former presidents, serving ministers, and traditional rulers. The launch was widely seen as both a literary event and a forum for national reflection.
Organizers said copies of the book would be distributed to libraries, universities, and research institutions to ensure wider access for students and scholars.
