The National Sports Commission has announced November 27 to December 11, 2026, as the official dates for the 21st National Sports Festival in Enugu State, with the biennial event branded the “Coal City Games.”
The dates were confirmed by the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, during the inaugural meeting of the Main Organising Committee held in Abuja. He described the schedule as sacrosanct following high-level consultations with Enugu State Governor, Barrister Peter Mbah.
According to the approved timeline, state contingents are expected to arrive in Enugu on November 25 and 26 ahead of the opening ceremony. The games will run for two weeks, with the closing ceremony slated for December 11 to round off activities.
Olopade commended Governor Mbah for what he called tremendous enthusiasm and the rapid pace of facility construction across the state. He said the level of preparation underscores Enugu’s readiness to host athletes and officials from across Nigeria.
The Director General stated that the 2026 edition is poised to become the most well-funded festival in the history of the event. He credited Premium Trust Bank, the lead sponsor, for making a historic contribution toward the successful delivery of the games.
With the bar set high by the previous edition in Abeokuta, Olopade expressed confidence that the Coal City Games will surpass those standards. He noted that funding, infrastructure, and planning are being aligned to deliver a world class competition.
In line with the NSC’s RHINSE reform agenda to reduce financial pressure on participating states, the Commission has capped the total number of sports at 20. The framework includes 15 compulsory sports and five optional sports to be selected by the host state.
The compulsory sports for the Enugu Games include Athletics with Para-Athletics, Badminton with Para-Badminton, Basketball with Wheelchair Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Football, Judo, Gymnastics, Swimming, Table Tennis with Para-Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, Mixed Martial Arts, Weightlifting with Para-Powerlifting, and Wrestling.
The NSC said the streamlined sports list will help states manage costs while maintaining competitive quality. Preparations are now underway as Enugu upgrades venues and logistics to welcome thousands of athletes, coaches, and spectators for the 21st edition of Nigeria’s biggest multi-sport event.
