Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon has said Nigeria did not fall apart during his time in office and expressed confidence that the country will not collapse despite its current challenges.
Gowon made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja at the launch of his 859-page autobiography, “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” subtitled “No Going Back.” The book chronicles his years in public service and addresses key moments in Nigeria’s history.
Speaking at the event, the ex-military leader said complex and unnecessary solutions were fueling tension across the country. He noted that Nigerians often complicate simple problems with ambiguous approaches that create more friction than progress.
“We never get tired of presenting difficult solutions to simple problems,” Gowon said. “Citizens would rather complicate the simple problems with more complex and ambiguous solutions that would generate tension in the country.”
The former head of state stressed that his record in office showed stability could be maintained even in difficult times. He said the book was written to correct misconceptions and fill gaps in public narratives about his administration.
“On my watch as Head of State, the country did not fall. And I am confident that, despite all its challenges, the nation still will not fall,” he stated.
Gowon expressed hope that the autobiography would provide clarity on decisions made during his tenure and help younger Nigerians understand the context behind them. He said accurate historical accounts were vital to shaping informed public debate.
The launch drew dignitaries and political figures who reflected on Gowon’s legacy and his continued interventions on national unity. Many praised his emphasis on duty and stability.
The 859-page memoir covers Gowon’s early life, military career, and leadership during the Nigerian Civil War. It is positioned as both a personal account and a contribution to Nigeria’s historical record.
