A birthday celebration in Ado-Odo/Otta Local Government Area of Ogun State ended in tragedy early Saturday when a 36-year-old man, Kunle Akinlose, was allegedly stabbed to death with a broken bottle following an argument at a bar on Ayetoro Road.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at Abato Bar, near Ifesowapo Bus Stop, according to community sources. Witnesses said the dispute began when another guest, Damilola Fagbemi, 31, had an altercation with the bar owner and allegedly attempted to attack him with some friends.
Akinlose reportedly stepped in to calm the situation and prevent the assault on the bar owner. Community members said those present urged Fagbemi to back down, but he became aggressive and the confrontation escalated into a physical fight.
During the fight, Akinlose allegedly overpowered Fagbemi. Sources said Fagbemi broke a bottle while Akinlose brought out a knife, which was later seized by others at the scene. The two were separated, but the truce was short-lived.
Witnesses said Fagbemi returned with the broken bottle and stabbed Akinlose in the hand, inflicting a deep wound. Akinlose ran into a nearby bar where a trader tied his injured hand with a cloth while they waited for a motorcycle to take him to the hospital.
The victim reportedly bled heavily while waiting and slumped before the bike arrived. A resident who identified himself as Ela said several riders refused to carry him due to the bleeding. By the time a motorcycle was secured, Akinlose had collapsed.
He was later rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead, according to the Ogun State Police Command. The command said the victim was 36 years old and died from injuries sustained during the altercation.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi said a report was made at Ayetoro Budo Division at about 6:10 a.m. on May 16, 2026. He said detectives visited the scene, began investigations, and have intensified efforts to arrest the fleeing suspect.
Oluseyi added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Police urged anyone with information on Fagbemi’s whereabouts to come forward as the command works to bring him to justice.
