Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has defended the military’s airstrike on Jilli market, saying it was closed five years ago due to its alleged use by insurgents and logistics suppliers.
The airstrike, carried out by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai on April 11, reportedly killed over 30 civilians and injured many more, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for investigation.
The governor explained that the Borno State Government maintains close coordination with the military and other security agencies before resettling any community or reopening markets, particularly in areas affected by insurgency. He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to aid ongoing military operations.
The military has justified the strike, saying it targeted a known terrorist enclave and logistics hub used by Boko Haram insurgents. The airstrike was part of ongoing counter-insurgency operations under Operation Hadin Kai, aimed at eliminating terrorist threats in the region.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for investigation and accountability. The Yobe State Government has activated its emergency response system, and the Borno State Specialist Hospital has appealed for blood donations to treat the injured.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding law-abiding citizens and sustaining collaborative efforts with security agencies to restore lasting peace and stability across the state.
