Samson Adamu has been appointed acting secretary-general of the Confederation of African Football, making him the first Nigerian to hold the position in the organization’s 70-year history.
Adamu replaces Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who stepped down to contest the presidential election of his country’s football federation.
The appointment was announced by the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, who praised Adamu’s exceptional leadership skills and experience in football administration. Adamu previously served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organizing major continental competitions.
The CAF Executive Committee proposed Adamu’s nomination, which was ratified by the congress at its meeting in Cairo on Sunday, March 29, 2026. This appointment is seen as a significant milestone for Nigerian football and a testament to Adamu’s dedication to the sport.
