President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, after she secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
In a statement released from the State House, the President praised the world record holder for once again lifting the nation’s spirit with her brilliance on the global stage.
“Tobi has once again demonstrated that with patriotic fervour, coupled with hard work and determination, any height is surmountable. Her achievement is a source of national pride,” President Tinubu said.
Amusan, 28, clocked an impressive 12.29 seconds to finish second in Tuesday’s final, narrowly behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who struck gold with a national record of 12.24s. Grace Stark of the United States claimed bronze in 12.34s, while Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44s.
Although she was bidding to reclaim the title she famously won in 2022 in Oregon—becoming the first Nigerian and African to clinch the 100m hurdles crown—Amusan’s silver medal in Tokyo marks her second career podium finish at the World Championships.
It further reinforces her reputation as one of the most consistent athletes in her event globally.
Beyond the medals, Amusan remains the women’s 100m hurdles world record holder at 12.12s and has added multiple Diamond League titles as well as Commonwealth Games gold to her glittering resume.
Her latest achievement not only cements her legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest athletes of all time but also continues to inspire a new generation of sportsmen and women across Africa
