The world football governing body, FIFA, has sought clarification from Nigerian authorities over the reported resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau amid allegations of government interference in the federation’s affairs.
In a letter dated September 1, 2026, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström requested an explanation on the circumstances surrounding Gusau’s reported resignation.
FIFA said it was particularly concerned by reports alleging that the NFF president resigned following a directive from the Presidency.
The organisation asked Nigerian football authorities to provide written confirmation that Gusau’s resignation was voluntary and was not influenced by pressure from government officials or other external parties.
FIFA also requested an official explanation from the Federal Government regarding the circumstances that led to the reported resignation.
The governing body cited Articles 14 and 19 of its Statutes, which require member associations to manage their affairs independently and without undue interference from governments or other third parties.
FIFA further demanded assurances that the NFF would continue to conduct its activities in accordance with its statutes and FIFA regulations.
The development could put Nigeria at risk of disciplinary measures if FIFA’s investigation establishes that government authorities interfered in the administration of the NFF in breach of its regulations.
The latest intervention has therefore heightened concerns over the future of football administration in Nigeria and the federation’s compliance with FIFA’s independence requirements.
