Favour Comprehensive College has emerged as the champion of the maiden edition of the Afeni Inter-Secondary School Football Tournament, defeating other participating schools to liftb the coveted trophy at the grand finale held on Thursday, July 24, 2026, in Idiroko, Ogun State.
The football competition, sponsored by the Acting Customs Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Afeni, in partnership with Jonnyyeko College of Health Science and Technology, featured 12 secondary schools from communities across the border region.
The tournament, organised as part of the Command’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, was designed to engage young people in productive activities, promote unity among border communities, encourage education, and discourage involvement in smuggling and other illegal cross-border activities.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Comptroller Afeni said the initiative was aimed at using sports as a platform to mentor students, develop their talents, and expose them to opportunities beyond their immediate environment.
He noted that the tournament reflects the Command’s commitment to youth development and community engagement, stressing that empowering young people through sports remains an effective strategy for promoting peace and reducing crime in border communities.
The competition, which ran from July 13 to July 24, 2026, engaged hundreds of students as players, officials, and supporters. It also received strong backing from educational authorities, youth organisations, and community leaders who applauded the initiative for promoting positive values among students.
At the end of the tournament, Favour Comprehensive College emerged champions, while winners and outstanding performers received cash prizes, educational materials, and sports equipment.
Individual awards were also presented to exceptional players. Okanlawon Al-Amin of S.S. International School emerged the tournament’s highest goal scorer with four goals, Olawale Saoban of Favour Comprehensive College won the Best Goalkeeper award, while Rigobert of Holy Childhood Academy was named the Most Valuable Player (Best Player) of the tournament.
The successful conclusion of the maiden edition of the Afeni Inter-Secondary School Football Tournament has been described as a major milestone in youth development and sports promotion in the Idiroko border area, with organisers expressing optimism that the competition will become an annual event.
The tournament is a grassroots sports initiative established to discover and nurture young football talents, promote education, and use sports as a tool for crime prevention and social transformation among youths in border communities.
