The management of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, has pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) by encouraging its lecturers and students to become active members of the professional body.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Olanrewaju Olaniyan, made the commitment during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Economic Society to his office.
Olaniyan said the university would mobilise its Economics lecturers, graduating students of Economics and Economics Education, as well as students in related disciplines, to participate actively in the activities of the society.
“Our lecturers, graduating B.Sc. Economics and Economics of Education students will become members of the society. We believe in the Nigerian Economic Society and we will encourage our students to participate actively,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed optimism about the society’s forthcoming annual conference, noting that many members of the university’s academic staff would participate in the event.
He described the Nigerian Economic Society as a key driver of economic policy formulation in Nigeria, noting that the body has played a significant role in shaping the country’s economic direction since its establishment in 1958.
Olaniyan further advocated the revival of the Committee of Heads of Departments of Economics (COHED), saying the platform is essential for harmonising Economics curricula and maintaining academic standards across tertiary institutions.
Earlier, the Acting Chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Economic Society, Prof. Oluwakemi Bolaji Okuwa, said the visit was aimed at deepening collaboration between the society and the university.
According to her, the society is building on an initiative to induct graduating Economics students into the professional body and is also seeking partnerships in research and economic development.
“We want your graduating Economics and allied course students, as well as your lecturers, to become members of the society. We are also inviting your lecturers to participate in our annual conference in September,” Okuwa said.
The delegation included the Financial Secretary of the society, Dr. Florence Oyebamiji; the Public Relations Officer, Rotimi Agboluaje; Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, Dr. Samuel Ochinyabo; and Research Fellow I at the institute, Dr. Sebil Oshota.
Senior officials of Emmanuel Alayande University, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, University Librarian, Head of the Department of Economics and student representatives, were also present at the meeting.
