Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called on citizens to honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s democracy heroes while renewing commitment to building a united and prosperous nation as the country marks Democracy Day on June 12.
In a commemorative message, Abiodun said the Government and people of Ogun State join Nigerians nationwide in remembering June 12 as a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey. He described the day as a symbol of courage and determination by citizens who fought to defend democracy and the right to choose their leaders.
The governor noted that June 12 holds special significance for Ogun State as the birthplace of Chief M.K.O. Abiola, whose presumed victory in the 1993 presidential election remains a turning point in Nigeria’s political history. He said Abiola’s vision of a united and prosperous Nigeria continues to inspire new generations.
Abiodun also acknowledged the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari for restoring June 12 as Nigeria’s official Democracy Day. He said the decision gave deserved recognition to Abiola and all other democracy heroes who stood for justice and democratic governance.
The governor commended the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for advancing democratic ideals through the Renewed Hope Agenda. He said the administration’s economic reforms are aimed at laying the foundation for sustainable growth and shared prosperity.
Abiodun highlighted youth-focused initiatives under the current administration, particularly the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, as key to empowering young people and expanding access to education and opportunity across the country.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions and to actively participate in nation-building. According to him, democracy can only thrive when citizens uphold the rule of law, promote accountability, and engage constructively in governance.
The governor emphasized the need to promote peace and security across all communities as essential to preserving democratic gains. He said a stable and secure environment remains the bedrock for economic progress and social development.
Abiodun concluded by calling on Ogun residents and Nigerians in general to work together to preserve the gains of democracy and build a more just, secure, and prosperous country for future generations.
