Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed that the students and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area remain within the Old Oyo National Park as security operations continue. The governor gave the update in Newsletter No. 140 released on Friday, 27 days after the incident.
The victims were taken on Friday, May 15, 2026, during coordinated attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A Primary School in Ahoro-Esinle. Scores of teachers and students were forcibly removed, leaving families and communities in distress.
Makinde acknowledged the pain and anxiety of the affected families, noting that repeated assurances of rescue may offer little comfort as the days pass. He said the victims remain the central focus of ongoing security efforts by the state government and security agencies.
The governor stated that every credible lead is being pursued and every lawful measure is being deployed to secure the safe release of the abductees. He emphasized that no effort is being spared to reunite the victims with their loved ones.
Intelligence reports indicate that the hostages are being held within the wider Old Oyo National Park axis. The park spans approximately 2,500 square kilometres across parts of ten local government areas in Oyo State, creating significant operational challenges.
Makinde explained that the size and difficult terrain of the park require patience, strategic coordination, and sustained efforts from security personnel. He said these factors are critical to ensuring a successful rescue operation without endangering the victims.
The governor urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free Citizens Enquiry Number, 615. He assured the public that all credible reports would receive prompt attention from security agencies.
Makinde also cautioned against the circulation of unverified information about the abduction. He warned that misinformation can compromise ongoing rescue efforts and hinder the work of security operatives on the ground.
He called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with useful information and to keep the abducted students and teachers in their prayers as efforts intensify to secure their safe return.
