General Birame Diop has officially assumed office as the new President of the ECOWAS Commission, beginning a new leadership phase for the West African regional bloc.
Diop, a former Senegalese Minister of Defence and former Chief of the General Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces, was appointed by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government during the organisation’s 69th Ordinary Summit in Sierra Leone.
He takes over from Dr. Omar Alieu Touray of The Gambia, whose four-year tenure as President of the ECOWAS Commission has ended.
Speaking on his new responsibility, Diop pledged to provide strategic leadership as ECOWAS seeks to strengthen regional integration, peace and security, economic cooperation and institutional effectiveness.
Under the new leadership, ECOWAS is expected to introduce reforms and new approaches to implementing its programmes, while maintaining focus on economic integration, security and political stability across West Africa.
Nigeria’s Anthony Ogunjimi has also assumed the position of Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, while all commissioner positions have been filled with new appointees.
The leadership transition comes as ECOWAS faces the need to strengthen regional cooperation and address growing security and political challenges affecting the West African sub-region.
