President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for a peaceful and credible governorship election in Osun State, urging voters, electoral officials and security agencies to ensure that Saturday’s poll is conducted without violence.
In a statement issued on Friday, the President urged the people of Osun State to exercise their constitutional right to vote while avoiding actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.
Fifteen candidates are expected to participate in the August 15, 2026 governorship election, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress candidate, Hon. Najeem Salaam.
Tinubu appealed to voters to turn out peacefully and assured residents that security agencies would take measures to protect them before, during and after the election.
He also tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with ensuring that the election is transparent, free and fair, stressing the need to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
The President described the Osun election as an opportunity for INEC to demonstrate its preparedness for the 2027 general elections, urging the commission to build on lessons from previous off-cycle elections.
Tinubu further directed the Inspector-General of Police and heads of other security agencies involved in the election to provide adequate security at polling units and other critical locations.
He warned against allowing individuals or groups seeking to disrupt the election to undermine the process, urging security personnel to remain professional and vigilant.
The President called on all candidates, political parties, supporters and other stakeholders to accept the outcome of the election peacefully and contribute to an atmosphere that allows voters to exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.
