Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been honoured by the Bauchi Emirate Council for his contributions to democratic governance, peace and national unity.
Jonathan was on Tuesday conferred with the traditional title of Jigon Bauchi by the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu, during a turbaning ceremony at the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi.
The Emirate Council said the recognition reflected Jonathan’s conduct in public office and his commitment to promoting peaceful coexistence and national stability.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed led government officials, political associates and other dignitaries to the palace for the ceremony.
Mohammed commended the Emir for recognising the former president, saying Jonathan’s contributions to democratic development and national stability had earned him respect across political and regional divides.
He described the honour as further recognition of Jonathan’s role in promoting peace and democratic values in Nigeria.
Responding, Jonathan expressed appreciation to the Emir and people of Bauchi State for the recognition, describing the title as a privilege he would cherish.
He pledged to respect the customs and traditions of the Bauchi Emirate Council and uphold the values associated with the traditional title.
The Emir described Jonathan as an exemplary leader whose conduct in public office and commitment to peace had continued to earn public respect.
The ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, title holders, government officials, political leaders and other dignitaries from Bauchi State and beyond.
