The Federal Government has begun moves to address longstanding welfare challenges facing serving and retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, with a review of salaries, allowances, housing support, pensions and insurance benefits.
The decision followed a meeting of the Ministerial/Stakeholders Committee on the Review of the Nigeria Police Force Salary Structure, Welfare Package and Settlement of Outstanding Benefits held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Abuja.
The committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, is expected to develop recommendations aimed at improving the welfare and motivation of police personnel while strengthening the operational capacity of the Force.
Nlia said the review would consider the prevailing economic realities and the peculiar demands of policing, while ensuring that proposed allowances comply with the Public Service Rules.
The committee also reviewed outstanding pension arrears, death benefits, Group Life Insurance liabilities, Group Personal Accident claims and other welfare obligations requiring government intervention.
In its deliberations, the committee identified inadequate accommodation as one of the major challenges affecting police personnel and called for a more realistic housing support framework to improve officers’ welfare, morale and productivity.
Members also agreed to harmonise existing allowances, eliminate duplications and retain only those recognised under the Public Service Rules, alongside justified police-specific operational allowances.
The committee directed its technical team to harmonise proposed allowances with existing regulations, consolidate similar items, justify discontinued allowances and prepare a revised schedule.
It also tasked the Secretariat with producing a comprehensive draft report for consideration at its next meeting before submission to the Federal Government.
Nlia described the review as a strategic investment in police welfare, expressing optimism that its recommendations would improve institutional efficiency and strengthen the Force’s ability to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
