The Kano State Government has intensified its enforcement of urban planning regulations, sealing more than 300 illegal structures across the state as it declared a zero-tolerance policy against unapproved developments.
Chairman of the Kano State Taskforce on Illegal Structures, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, announced the crackdown on Wednesday, saying the exercise targeted buildings erected without government approval or in violation of the state’s master plan.
According to him, the enforcement covered major corridors, including Maiduguri Road, Western Bypass, Eastern Bypass, Ahmadu Bello Way and Gwarzo Road.
Among the affected properties were Dan’agundi Shopping Plaza, block-making sites, a commercial car park, a Chinese construction company’s site, buildings located beneath high-tension electricity lines in Rimin Gata, and a two-storey building in Gadon Kaya that was resealed by the taskforce.
Sani explained that the operation focused on structures built on road setbacks, public land, waterways and power line corridors, describing them as clear violations of urban planning regulations.
He directed owners of the affected properties to report to the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS) headquarters on Dr. Bala Muhammad Way to regularise their land and building documents.
According to him, property owners must present their Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), land allocation documents and approved building plans before their premises can be reopened or construction activities resumed.
He warned that developers who fail to comply with the directive would face prosecution, stressing that the state government would not tolerate illegal developments that undermine orderly urban growth.
Sani added that the taskforce would sustain the enforcement exercise across Kano to ensure that all physical developments comply with established planning laws and regulations.
