Nigeria has secured about $500 million in funding from Gavi to strengthen routine immunisation and primary healthcare services across the country.
The funding was approved under the Gavi 6.0 programme following high-level discussions in Abuja between the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and Gavi Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sania Nishtar.
The support will accelerate routine immunisation, sustain Nigeria’s polio eradication efforts, expand Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, strengthen primary healthcare services and improve long-term vaccine financing.
Welcoming the intervention, Professor Pate described the funding as a major boost to the country’s healthcare system. He said Gavi’s country-focused reforms, particularly the introduction of a five-year funding envelope, would enable Nigeria to plan more effectively and expand access to life-saving vaccines.
According to the minister, the initiative will help reach more children and vulnerable populations while enhancing the resilience of the nation’s primary healthcare system.
The latest funding reinforces Gavi’s long-standing partnership with Nigeria and is expected to improve vaccine access, strengthen healthcare delivery and support the country’s drive toward better public health outcomes.
