Ogun State has recorded a landmark in its 2026 Hajj operations with the successful arrival of the second batch of pilgrims via a direct flight from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to the Gateway International Airport, Iperu-Remo. The 345 pilgrims touched down on Friday evening aboard an Airbus A330 operated by Flynas.
Ogun State Amirul Hajj, Alhaji Shamsideen Apelogun, praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for making the direct return flight possible. He described the development as a remarkable achievement in the state’s history and commended the governor’s foresight and visionary leadership.
“This direct flight from Saudi Arabia to the Gateway International Airport is, no doubt, a remarkable achievement in the history of Ogun State,” Apelogun said. “We must continually be grateful for Governor Abiodun’s foresight and visionary leadership.”
The Amirul Hajj expressed delight that Ogun pilgrims were among the first to utilise the state-owned international airport for such a historic international airlift. He noted that the direct flight eased the stress of transit and shortened the journey home for the returning pilgrims.
Apelogun also thanked Governor Abiodun for his fatherly support and unwavering commitment to the successful completion of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage. He said the governor was notably present throughout the pilgrims’ stay in Medina and Makkah, consistently reaching out to check on their welfare.
“Governor Abiodun consistently reached out to inquire about our welfare and well-being to ensure that we were adequately cared for,” he added. “We pray that Almighty Allah will continue to strengthen our governor as he continues to take the state to greater heights.”
The second batch’s arrival followed the departure of the first batch of 345 pilgrims from the Gateway International Airport to Saudi Arabia on May 3. That outbound flight marked the first time Ogun pilgrims were airlifted directly from the state to Makkah.
The use of Gateway International Airport for the Hajj airlift underscores Ogun’s push to position the facility as a hub for international operations. Officials say the direct flights reduce logistics challenges and enhance convenience for pilgrims from the state and neighbouring areas.
With the successful completion of the return leg, Ogun State officials say they are committed to sustaining the direct flight arrangement for future Hajj operations. Apelogun concluded by praying for Allah’s guidance as the state continues to build on the milestone.
