The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of a senior officer captured in a viral video making threatening remarks against members of the public who were filming police activities.
The officer, identified as ASP Newton Isokpehi, was seen in the footage issuing threats to citizens recording police operations. The Force described his actions as unacceptable, unprofessional, and inconsistent with its code of conduct and ongoing reform agenda.
Authorities said the behaviour contradicts efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and citizen-focused policing across the country. The Force stressed that such conduct undermines public trust in law enforcement institutions.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu said members of the public have the right to lawfully record officers on duty. He noted that recording is permissible as long as it does not obstruct operations, compromise safety, or interfere with lawful police work.
Following the circulation of the video, Isokpehi was identified and summoned to the Anambra State Command Headquarters. Immediate disciplinary procedures have commenced against him, according to police officials.
The Force reiterated that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for public accountability. Officials warned that such lawful actions should not attract harassment or intimidation from officers in the line of duty.
The Nigeria Police Force said it does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct capable of eroding confidence in the police. It added that officers are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism at all times.
A formal statement outlining the outcome of the disciplinary measures against the officer will be released once the process is concluded. The Force assured the public that the matter is being handled in line with established procedures.
Police authorities also thanked Nigerians for their continued partnership in promoting accountability and improved policing standards. They urged citizens to continue engaging constructively with the Force to strengthen transparency in law enforcement.
