The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the environmental incident recorded in parts of Ijebu-Ode on Friday has been brought under control.
The incident occurred along the Agoro/Okunowa Road area of Ijebu-Ode on May 15, 2026, after reports of a suspected chemical emission affecting residents and students in nearby communities.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, immediately deployed the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and other tactical teams to secure the affected area and support emergency operations.
Police operatives from Obalende Division also mobilized to the scene to assist with evacuation efforts, maintain public order, and protect residents.
Some of the schools affected by the incident include Our Ladies Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Titilayo Agbaje Comprehensive High School, Ifesowapo Comprehensive High School, St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, and Orphanage Primary School, all located within the affected communities.
Victims affected by the incident were evacuated to the General Hospital and some private medical facilities for treatment. The police confirmed that no life was lost and stated that those receiving treatment are responding positively.
Preliminary environmental assessments reportedly detected high methane gas concentrations within the area, while experts and emergency agencies continue investigations to determine the source of the emission and possible environmental risks.
The police command said security surveillance has been intensified around the affected communities to prevent panic and support ongoing technical assessments.
CP Ojajuni assured residents that the situation remains calm and under close monitoring. He advised members of the public to avoid spreading false information and continue with their lawful activities.
Residents were also warned to avoid open flames or ignition sources in areas with unusual gas odors and to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, or breathing difficulties.
The Ogun State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while working closely with the Ogun State Government and other agencies to ensure public safety.
