The Osun State Government has rolled out a large-scale humanitarian intervention to provide free artificial limbs for 1,000 amputees across the state, in what officials describe as the first programme of its kind in Osun’s history.
Governor Ademola Adeleke approved the initiative to restore mobility and dignity to residents living with limb loss, according to a statement posted on the state government’s official X handle on Sunday. The programme is being coordinated by the Office of the Special Adviser on Special Needs.
Special Adviser on Special Needs to the Governor, Kamil Aransi, announced the intervention on Friday. He said Governor Adeleke is the first governor in Osun State to fund and deliver free prosthetic limbs to amputees at no cost to beneficiaries.
Aransi noted that the programme aligns with the Osun State Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Law, 2024, which Adeleke signed on June 10, 2024. The law guarantees key rights for persons with disabilities, including access to free health insurance and assistive devices.
The first phase of the intervention is a Measurement and Assessment Camp scheduled for May 7 to May 9, 2026, at the SOB Conference and Events Centre in Osogbo. Sessions will begin daily at 7:30 a.m. Beneficiaries will undergo detailed medical assessments to determine the prosthetic limb best suited to their individual needs.
Prospective beneficiaries must register ahead of the camp by calling or texting 08038044318 or 08137991959 to schedule appointments. Aransi stressed that walk-in access will not be permitted, citing the need for proper planning and crowd control during assessments.
Fittings will be handled by accredited professionals in the month following the assessment camp. The government said follow-up support will also be provided to ensure proper functionality, adjustment, and rehabilitation for each recipient.
“This intervention aligns with our broader agenda to strengthen support systems for persons living with disabilities,” Aransi said. He added that the initiative complements ongoing reforms to expand healthcare access and promote dignity for vulnerable residents.
The state government framed the programme as part of Adeleke’s wider social protection agenda. Officials say the free prosthetics will reduce economic barriers that often prevent amputees from returning to work, school, or daily activities, and signal a shift toward inclusive governance in Osun State.
