The Chairman of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Ogun State, Comrade Solomon Alani Bankole, has called on the federal and state governments to review Nigeria’s justice system to meet global standards.
He made this call while speaking at a lecture on Justice, Peace, and Community Responsibility in Nation Building during the fourth anniversary and book launch of the Oluwayemisi Brown Foundation in Abeokuta.
Comrade Bankole said the review is necessary because of the many challenges facing the country’s economy. He noted that poor leadership and bad governance have weakened the justice system.
According to him, corruption has deeply affected the system, making it difficult for ordinary Nigerians to get justice. He said justice is now often given to those who can afford to pay, leaving the poor without hope.
He added that the judiciary, which should protect the common man, is no longer trusted by many Nigerians.
Comrade Bankole therefore called for urgent reforms to restore public trust and ensure fairness, so that society can become better.
Also speaking at the event, Superintendent Mariam Akinsanya, who represented the Controller of Borstal Institution, Adigbe, explained that the centre houses young people, mostly between ages 16 and 23, who are in conflict with the law or beyond parental control.
She said the institution provides education from secondary school to university level, as well as vocational training for those who want to learn a trade.
Other speakers at the event talked about prison welfare, rehabilitation of inmates, and the effects of stress on human health.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion, Major M. A. Adeniji, represented by Major J. Abolade, praised the foundation for its impact over the past four years, especially in restoring hope and helping the less privileged.
He also commended the founder for documenting the foundation’s work in a book, saying it will inspire others to serve humanity.
The founder of the foundation, Mrs Oluwayemisi Brown, thanked guests for their support. She said the organisation is committed to promoting justice, peace, and support for vulnerable people.
She added that the foundation has been involved in prison outreach, inmate welfare, human rights advocacy, community support, and public awareness programmes.
