Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked the convoy of Zamfara State Governor’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Mouktar Lugga, in a daring ambush along the Funtua-Gusau highway. The incident occurred near Kucheri village at about 6:16 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, as Lugga was returning from an official engagement.
According to reports, the attackers emerged from both sides of the road and opened fire on the convoy, targeting the vehicle conveying the Chief of Staff and his team. A bullet reportedly pierced the windshield, narrowly missing the driver.
Another assailant attempted to fire at close range but his weapon malfunctioned, foiling the attack. Despite the surprise attack, the driver successfully maneuvered the vehicle out of the ambush, ensuring the safety of the occupants.
Miraculously, all occupants of the vehicle escaped without injuries, although the vehicle was damaged in the attack. The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, highlighting the persistent security challenges in Zamfara.
The attack on Lugga’s convoy is the latest in a string of incidents targeting government officials and civilians in Zamfara. The state has been plagued by banditry and kidnappings in recent months.
