The Bayelsa State Government announced the sudden passing of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed while heading to a meeting in his office on Thursday, December 11, 2025. He was 60 years old.
Ewhrudjakpo was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was pronounced dead. His demise is a significant loss to the government, the people of Bayelsa State, and the nation.
A dedicated public servant, Ewhrudjakpo served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure and as a Senator representing the Bayelsa West Senatorial District before becoming Deputy Governor in 2020. He was known for his commitment to principled leadership and public service.
Governor Douye Diri has declared three days of state mourning, with flags flown at half-mast, and called for prayers for the Ewhrudjakpo family and the state. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described Ewhrudjakpo’s death as an “inexplicable loss” and praised him as a “hero of political integrity”.
Ewhrudjakpo’s colleagues and fellow politicians have expressed condolences, highlighting his commitment to public service. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also mourned his passing, describing him as a “lawyer who carried the values of our profession into his work in government”.
Ewhrudjakpo’s legacy as a dedicated public servant and steadfast politician will be remembered, and his passing leaves a void in Bayelsa State’s government and beyond.
