Burial arrangements for Adesiyan Adegboye, one of the teachers killed in a coordinated attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, commenced on Friday at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso.
Adegboye, 49, was shot dead at the scene of the abduction last Friday. He is scheduled to be laid to rest later today at his residence in the Owolake area of Ogbomoso. The teacher was born on December 11, 1976.
The attack occurred at about 9:30 a.m. when bandits stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele. Teachers and students were abducted during the coordinated assault, which left one person dead.
Following the incident, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu visited the scene on Saturday and deployed additional detectives from Force Headquarters in Abuja to work with the joint security team. The deployment is aimed at ensuring the safe rescue of the abducted teachers and students.
Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School. He also confirmed that one person was killed during the attack.
The incident triggered widespread panic in Ogbomoso and surrounding communities, with many parents rushing to schools to withdraw their children over fears of further attacks. The scale of the abductions has heightened anxiety among residents already worried about insecurity in rural areas.
Some schools were forced to shut down temporarily following rumours that bandits had infiltrated Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. The institution’s management later dismissed the allegation as false, but the panic disrupted academic activities in parts of the city.
Police say rescue operations are ongoing, with security operatives combing forests and surrounding areas in Oriire LGA. The command has urged residents to provide useful information that could aid the swift release of the captives.
The burial of Adegboye has drawn teachers, students, and community members who described him as dedicated and committed to his students. Many are calling for stronger security measures in schools across Oyo State to prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
