Former Anambra governor Peter Obi has expressed confidence that Nigeria will have free, fair and credible elections in 2027. He made the statement on Saturday while speaking at the national convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja.
Obi told party members that the country’s current challenges stem from systemic looting, not a lack of resources. He said Nigeria has the capacity to overcome poverty and insecurity if leadership becomes more accountable.
“Every Nigerian is worried, no Nigerian knows where the next meal will come from. Nigeria is not a poor country, Nigeria is looted into poverty and we will change it,” he said.
The former presidential candidate rejected suggestions that credible polls would be impossible in 2027. He urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and participate actively in the political process.
Obi emphasized the need to move Nigeria from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven one. He argued that creating jobs and expanding local production are key to improving living standards.
He cited data showing over 140 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, with more than 80 million young people unemployed or underemployed. According to him, these figures reflect misplaced leadership priorities.
Speaking on his defection to the NDC, Obi said his decisions have always been guided by principle. He quoted Winston Churchill: “Some men change their party for the sake of their principles; others their principles for the sake of their party.”
Obi said he joined the NDC to work with leaders committed to rebuilding the country ahead of the 2027 general election. He called on members to focus on solutions that directly address citizens’ daily struggles.
The convention served as a platform for the NDC to outline its policy direction and mobilize support for the next electoral cycle.
