Former Kano State governor Ibrahim Shekarau has been named the All Progressives Congress consensus candidate for the Kano Central senatorial seat. The decision followed a reconciliation meeting convened by Governor Abba Yusuf in Abuja on Sunday.
The meeting brought together all aspirants and key stakeholders from the district. According to a statement by Sunusi Dawakin, the governor’s spokesperson, the parties agreed to set aside their differences in the interest of unity and the political future of Kano.
Eight aspirants voluntarily stepped down and endorsed Shekarau as the APC flagbearer for the district. The move was described as a step to prevent a divisive primary and strengthen the party ahead of the election.
Governor Yusuf commended the aspirants for prioritizing the collective interest of the state over personal ambition. He called their decision a demonstration of maturity, sacrifice, and commitment to democratic values.
Yusuf reiterated his administration’s focus on dialogue, inclusion, and consensus-building as tools for political stability and development. He said the resolution reflects the kind of leadership needed to manage party affairs peacefully.
One of the stakeholders, Usman Bala, said all eight aspirants unanimously supported the governor’s peace initiative. He described the intervention as wise and timely, noting that it helped avoid internal friction.
Shekarau thanked Yusuf for facilitating lasting peace among the contenders. He also expressed gratitude to the other aspirants for rallying behind him and the broader APC agenda in Kano.
The consensus arrangement is expected to position the APC strongly in Kano Central, a key senatorial district in the state. Party leaders said the unity move would improve coordination and reduce the risk of post-primary disputes.
With Shekarau now the party’s candidate, attention will shift to the general election campaign and the APC’s strategy to retain the seat.
