The Ogun State Police Command has started an investigation into a suspected cult-related clash that led to the death of a man in Abeokuta on Sunday.
The incident happened around 2:45 p.m. along Wasimi Ake Road, between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank, towards the Ijemo Agbadu area. According to the police, the clash involved members of rival cult groups.
Police authorities clarified that the incident did not occur at Ake Palace and was not connected to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration held at the palace. They stressed that the violence was limited to the road and nearby streets.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots, which caused panic in the area as the attackers fled through adjoining streets.
Operatives from the Oke Itoku Division responded quickly after receiving distress calls.
At the scene, they found a man identified as “Stone” with serious gunshot wounds. He was taken to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, where he was later confirmed dead.
His body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
The police said they have launched a manhunt for those responsible and are following leads to arrest and prosecute the suspects.
They also confirmed that calm has returned to the area, with security officers deployed to prevent further violence.
Residents have been advised to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to the police through available emergency lines.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, assured the public of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
