The Office of the Assistant Secretary General of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has acknowledged “one or two infractions” in the ongoing accreditation registration process for student leaders, but said over 95% of registered SUG Presidents have been verified as legitimate.
Comr. Adejuwon Olatunji Emmanuel, Assistant Secretary General, NANS Headquarters, disclosed this in an official statement on Saturday. He commended Nigerian students and stakeholders for their vigilance in monitoring the exercise.
“From our assessment so far, over 95% of the registered SUG Presidents are verified and legitimate, which reflects a high level of compliance,” Emmanuel stated. He added that no large-scale process is entirely free from error, stressing that continuous monitoring remains essential for transparency and accountability.
For clarity, the statement noted that the observed infractions did not originate from the Independent Convention Planning Committee, I-CPC, or the Office of the Assistant Secretary General.
Instead, the lapses stemmed from the channels through which accreditation codes were distributed, particularly at the level of Joint Campus Committees, JCCs, and other stakeholders.
Emmanuel emphasized that the accreditation process remains transparent and open to public scrutiny. He said access has been deliberately made available for visibility to allow students and the public to track the exercise in real time.
To address the discrepancies, the NANS Headquarters said corrective measures have already been taken. New access codes have been generated and issued to affected institutions, especially in cases where unauthorized individuals registered as SUG Presidents.
“We wish to assure all stakeholders that the process will continue to be closely monitored, and any further infractions will be promptly addressed,” the statement read.
The Assistant Secretary General maintained that the goal is to protect the integrity of student representation ahead of upcoming conventions.
He urged students to remain vigilant and report suspicious registrations through official channels. According to him, student participation is critical to ensuring that only duly elected campus leaders gain access to NANS platforms and decision-making processes.
The accreditation exercise is a key step in preparations for NANS activities, including national conventions where student leaders vote on policy and leadership.
The association said it will continue to publish updates and urged JCCs to follow approved distribution protocols for access codes.
