Management of Sa’adu Zungur University, SAZU, Bauchi, has confirmed that Maryam Yakeem, a 200-level Biology Education student, was attacked by suspected phone snatchers on Thursday in Bauchi.
The University’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday. He clarified that the incident occurred outside the university environment, contrary to online reports suggesting the attack happened within the campus.
“The university management wishes to categorically state that this claim is false and does not reflect the reality of the situation,” Hassan said. He stressed that no cases of insecurity have been recorded within SAZU’s three campuses due to sustained collaboration with internal security structures and relevant agencies.
According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fatimah Tahir, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the safety and security of students and staff. She recalled a recent courtesy visit to the state Commissioner of Police to strengthen collaboration and enhance security support for the university community.
The management expressed concern over what it described as the dissemination of unverified and misleading information by some online media outlets. It noted that such reports could cause unnecessary panic and public unrest, and fall short of journalistic ethics and professionalism.
In response to the incident, the University’s Chief Security Officer, alongside the Dean of Student Affairs, visited Yakeem at the hospital to ensure she received adequate medical attention. The management confirmed that the student’s condition is now stable.
Prof. Tahir, speaking on behalf of the University, extended sympathy to the affected student and her family. She reiterated SAZU’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all students, both within and outside the campus.
The Vice-Chancellor called for calm among students, staff, and the general public. She assured that necessary measures are being taken to strengthen security around student residential areas and to deepen intelligence-sharing with security agencies in Bauchi State.
Management urged media organizations to verify facts before publication to avoid misinformation. It added that the University will continue to prioritize student welfare while working with stakeholders to ensure a safe learning environment across all SAZU campuses.
