The appointment of Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as head of youth mobilisation for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign has drawn mixed reactions across social media and political circles in Osun State.
Davido announced the appointment on his X account on Tuesday, stating that he had been named Head of Youth Mobilisation Council for the governor’s campaign under the Accord Party. “We look forward to a smooth campaign and you RE-ELECTION Your Excellency! 4+4,” he wrote.
Governor Adeleke, who is seeking a second term in the Osun governorship election scheduled for August 8, 2026, is running under the Accord Party. The appointment formalises Davido’s long-standing public support for his uncle, which was visible during previous campaigns in the state.
Within 24 hours of the post, the announcement generated significant buzz online. Supporters of the “Funds” crooner congratulated him, describing the move as a boost for youth inclusion and energy in the campaign. Others questioned the role of entertainers in partisan politics and governance.
Critics argued that Davido’s lifestyle and public image may not align with the expectations of youth leadership in politics. X user @bigbrownson wrote: “Davido you’re not worthy of that position… You can’t be living a reckless life as a musician and be a Youth leader.” Another user, @Diamie_x, said: “This guy doesn’t know a thing about politics but yet got this position, favoritism at its peak.”
Some commentators also challenged the governor’s record, linking their view of the appointment to Adeleke’s performance in office. @eddyunlimited wrote: “You want to campaign for someone who has done poorly in the office. I challenge you to list his achievements in the last four years.” User @iambenedict added: “I hope Governor performed well to deserve a second tenure not just to say 4+4.”
Supporters countered that entertainers are role models with influence over young voters and can drive mobilisation. @OfficialClever4 posted: “OBO don level up proper! From dropping bangers to becoming the head of youth mobilisation… Osun youths, una ready make we turn this campaign to a concert or wetin?” Others, like @InsightByTee, wrote: “Osun youths are LOCKED IN!!! 4+4 is LOADED, smooth campaign activated.”
The debate also touched on broader questions of celebrity involvement in governance. @olam_xx argued: “Great Artistes are role model for youths… Politics is a very dirty game and it shouldn’t be your thing at all cos people are looking up to you.” Meanwhile, @midenation_ called it “First big Afrobeats star in that role legacy loading.”
Davido has been a visible figure in Osun politics since 2018, performing at rallies and using his platforms to canvas support for Adeleke. The new appointment marks his first formal role in a campaign council, with responsibility for youth outreach and mobilisation ahead of the August poll.
Political analysts note that celebrity endorsements can increase youth turnout but also invite scrutiny of the candidate’s record. With campaign activities intensifying, Adeleke’s team is banking on Davido’s reach among young voters, while opponents are framing the move as nepotism.
