Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared that former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, cannot dictate to him on political matters in the state.
Yusuf, who recently defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC, emphasized that he is the leader of the party in Kano.
Yusuf explained that his defection was prompted by internal crises within the NNPP, and he had raised concerns about the party’s affairs, which were dismissed. He stated, “I want to reaffirm that in breaking away from our former movement, we did not commit any wrongdoing. We raised concerns about the state of affairs affairs affairs affairs affairs of the party because we foresaw the crisis.”
The governor also addressed accusations of betraying the Kwankwasiyya Movement, questioning whether members were informed before some decided to leave the NNPP. He emphasized his respect for Ganduje but asserted his leadership in Kano APC, saying, “What exists between me and Ganduje is mutual respect. But he cannot give me instructions because I am the leader.”
Yusuf’s defection has stirred debates in Kano, with some supporters seeing it as progress, while others accuse him of betrayal. The governor maintains that his decision will bring calm and development to the state.
The governor’s assertion of leadership comes as he seeks to consolidate his position within the APC. His decision to join the party has been seen as a strategic move to strengthen his position in Kano politics.
Ganduje, who was ousted as APC national chairman, has been critical of Yusuf’s defection. However, Yusuf insists that his decision is driven by a desire to serve the people of Kano.
