The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a significant reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries, as it held its 2026 first-quarter Durbar and award ceremony in Abeokuta.
The event, presided over by the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, provided a platform to review performance, engage officers in strategic discussions, and recognise outstanding personnel within the Command.
Presenting the first-quarter performance report, Fasakin disclosed that road fatalities dropped from 98 in 2025 to 80 in 2026, while the number of injured persons declined from 488 to 366. He added that the total number of people involved in road crashes also reduced from 1,582 to 1,172 within the same period.
According to him, the improvement in road safety was driven by intensified enforcement and compliance measures. He noted that detected traffic offences increased from 7,647 in 2025 to 11,717 in 2026, while the number of apprehended offenders rose from 6,822 to 9,661.
Despite the progress, the Sector Commander stressed the need for sustained public enlightenment campaigns to instill a stronger culture of safety among road users.
Highlighting key achievements, Fasakin pointed to several infrastructural and operational milestones recorded by the Command. These include the construction of a standard Quarter Guard—described as the first of its kind within the FRSC—as well as the asphalting of the Command’s premises. He also cited improved operational efficiency, prompt report rendition, and enhanced visibility through media engagement.
The Durbar, chaired by Chief Road Marshal Assistant Adebajo alongside Route Commander Olowa, also featured an “Administrative Immunity” session, where officers were encouraged to speak openly on welfare and operational challenges.
Some of the issues raised during the dialogue included inadequate funding and limited opportunities for capacity building, which participants said could impact service delivery if not addressed.
The Command also used the occasion to honour exceptional units and personnel. The RS2.212 Imeko Unit Command was named Best Unit for operational excellence, while Sector Route Commander Muyiwa S. Sodeko received recognition for exemplary leadership. Other awardees included DRC SS Adeleke and RMA 1 OS Akinremi, both commended for diligence and professionalism.
In his closing remarks, the Deputy Corps Commander and Head of Operations, Samuel Ogundayo, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to improving road safety and ensuring that Ogun State roads rank among the safest in Nigeria.
