The violent attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) office in Ubima Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, has sent shockwaves across the state, with many condemning the brazen act of violence.
The thugs, who were reportedly armed with heavy firepower, invaded the community on Thursday night, shooting sporadically and setting the party secretariat ablaze.
The attack was believed to be linked to former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi’s planned visit to the community on Friday to officially register with the ADC at the ward level.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “chaotic” and “fearful”, as the thugs reappeared on Friday morning and mounted a roadblock on the Omuawa-Ubima Road, stopping every bus with an ADC banner from entering Ubima. The situation was eventually brought under control by security operatives mobilized to the area, but not before the thugs had inflicted significant damage on the party office.
The ADC has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an attempt to intimidate the party and its leaders. Amaechi, a prominent leader of the ADC, is seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027, and the attack is being seen as a clear attempt to disrupt his campaign.
The Rivers State Government has yet to comment on the incident, but security agencies are working to apprehend the perpetrators.
The attack has sparked concerns about the security situation in Rivers State and the potential for violence in the run-up to the 2027 elections.
The incident has also raised questions about the ability of politicians to campaign freely and safely in the state, with many calling for increased security measures to protect citizens and politicians alike.
