The Ogun State Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission, Hon. Morakinyo OgoOluwa Akinleye, has cautioned political actors, aspirants, party leaders, and their supporters against engaging in campaigns of calumny as the 2027 general elections approach.
Akinleye stressed that political campaigns must be free from hate speech, ethnic or sub-ethnic prejudice, and divisive rhetoric, urging stakeholders to conduct their engagements with decorum, substance, and respect for the rule of law, while focusing on developmental issues.
The State Ombudsman, in a statement made available to Global Tribune on Wednesday, warned that elections should not be turned into arenas for personal attacks, character assassination, or misinformation, noting that such practices undermine democratic institutions and erode public confidence.
He encouraged candidates to present quantifiable and people-oriented plans, articulate clear manifestos, and participate in constructive debates that directly address the needs and aspirations of Ogun State residents.
According to the statement, Ogun State has earned a reputation as a beacon of intellectualism, progressive thought, and political maturity within the Federal Republic of Nigeria and beyond.
“The electorate of Ogun State deserves campaigns built on ideas, not insults; on programmes, not propaganda; on vision, not violence. Campaigns must be inclusive and devoid of ethnic or sub-ethnic prejudices,” the statement read.
It further cautioned that elections must not be reduced to battlegrounds of personal attacks, misinformation, or divisive rhetoric, as such approaches weaken democratic institutions and diminish public trust.
“Instead, candidates are encouraged to articulate clear manifestos, engage in constructive debates, and present measurable plans that speak directly to the needs and aspirations of our people,” the statement added.
