A commercial hall under construction in the Iyana Oloke area of Onikolobo, Abeokuta, collapsed on Thursday at approximately 13:00 hrs, resulting in one worker sustaining severe injuries.
According to eyewitness accounts, two labourers were present at the site when the structure gave way. One escaped unharmed, while the other became trapped under debris before being rescued by emergency responders.
The Ogun State Fire Service, in collaboration with local residents, formed a rapid‑response rescue team that extracted the trapped worker and transported him to a nearby medical facility. Hospital officials have confirmed that the injured employee is currently in stable condition and receiving appropriate treatment.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Ogun State Building Collapse and Protection Guild indicate that substandard construction practices were the primary cause of the incident. Chairman Adebayo Ogunsola reported that investigators observed the use of inferior materials and inadequate structural support, both of which compromised the building’s integrity.
In response, the Ogun State Building Production Management has sealed off the affected site to prevent further hazards and to facilitate a comprehensive safety audit. The agency has issued a public warning that unauthorized entry to the premises could result in additional danger and will be subject to enforcement action.
Residents and commuters in the Onikolobo corridor are advised to exercise caution and avoid the immediate vicinity until authorities declare the area safe. Community leaders are working with local government officials to establish temporary alternative routes for pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
The collapse has renewed concerns regarding construction standards within Abeokuta, where several recent building failures have prompted calls for tighter regulatory oversight. Industry experts are urging the state government to enforce existing building codes more rigorously and to implement systematic inspection protocols.
State officials have committed to a full, transparent investigation and have indicated that any contractors, engineers, or supervising firms found negligent will be held accountable under applicable laws. The Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning will dispatch a team of structural engineers to assess nearby projects for similar vulnerabilities.
Labour unions representing construction workers have demanded enhanced safety training and the provision of personal protective equipment on all sites, emphasizing that improved worker welfare can significantly reduce the human cost of such incidents.
Authorities anticipate releasing a detailed report on the cause of the collapse and outlining corrective measures within the coming weeks. Citizens are encouraged to report any unsafe construction activities to the relevant regulatory agencies to help prevent future tragedies.
