Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State fulfilled a campaign pledge by presenting brand‑new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to the chairmen of all 20 Local Government Areas in the state.
The ceremony took place at the Government House in Abeokuta on Thursday, deliberately timed to coincide with the Christmas festivities, allowing the chairmen to receive the keys amidst holiday cheer and renewed optimism for the year ahead.
Representing the governor, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat commended the chairmen for their relentless role in delivering democratic dividends at the grassroots level.
He conveyed Abiodun’s heartfelt message of appreciation for the council leaders’ dedication, noting that their on‑ground efforts have been instrumental in translating state policies into tangible benefits for ordinary Ogun residents.
Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast commitment to sustained collaboration with local governments, stressing that improved synergy is essential to enhancing the welfare and quality of life of Ogun residents.
He emphasized that the SUV hand‑over is not a standalone gesture but part of a broader, strategic effort to strengthen grassroots administration and empower local leaders to execute their mandates more efficiently.
Responding on behalf of the chairmen, Dr. Mrs. Afolasade Adeyemo Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Ogun State chapter and Chairperson of Odeda Local Government described the presentation as both timely and commendable.
She thanked Governor Abiodun for keeping his promise, noting that the gesture had injected a fresh wave of motivation across the councils.
Adeyemo highlighted Governor Abiodun’s multi‑sector achievements in education, housing, healthcare and road infrastructure, pointing out that the administration’s ISEYA mantra “Innovation, Sustainability, Empowerment, Youth and Agriculture” has positioned Ogun State on a path of sustainable development.
She affirmed that local government chairmen will continue partnering with the state government to make Ogun a model of effective, citizen‑centric governance.
She added that the SUVs will greatly improve the capacity of council chairmen to access rural and hard‑to‑reach communities, enabling more effective responses to the needs and aspirations of grassroots populations.
The enhanced mobility, she said, will facilitate quicker emergency interventions, better monitoring of development projects, and more regular community engagement.
The distribution of the vehicles underscores the administration’s focus on enhancing mobility and service delivery at the local level, aligning with its overall development agenda. It also signals a strategic investment in local government infrastructure that is expected to yield measurable gains in public service efficiency and community satisfaction.
