The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), on Friday, August 22, 2025, held the official flag-off ceremony of the Ojogbon Orchard Park, a 10-acre fruit orchard dedicated to providing free fruits for students, staff, and even visitors on campus.
The orchard was jointly donated by Prof. Adeniyi Afolabi of the Department of Chemistry, FUNAAB, and Farmer Ayopo Somefun, CEO of Sogold Agricultural Ventures.
The special project was established in loving memory of Mr. B. A. Afolabi (Gbajumo Photo) and Mrs. N. A. Afolabi (Iya Onibata), as well as Ambassador Yinka Somefun (Blackie).
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O. B. Kehinde, described the project as a “God-sent” initiative and called for a change in the culture of flaunting wealth in Nigeria.
“We need to have a rethink in Nigeria. Big manism is not about what we wear. We wear our wealth in this country, flaunt it, and waste it. This project is not about showing off. It is unique and timely, especially in a period when Nigeria is facing challenges,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor prayed for the benefactors, noting that their contributions would be a blessing to generations yet unborn.
Farmer Ayopo Somefun, in his remarks, shared that the idea was inspired by his personal childhood struggles with hunger.
“I grew up going from one house to another in search of food, plucking fruits and being chased by their owners. Now that God has blessed me, I do not want others to experience that kind of suffering. That was why I came up with this initiative,” he explained.
He revealed that the park will host 14 varieties of fruits, including oranges, guavas, tangelos, cashews, grapes, mangoes, pawpaws, and coconuts.
Prof. Adeniyi Afolabi also highlighted the motivation behind his contribution, citing the growing hunger challenge among students on campus.
“Over the past two to three years, I noticed students constantly complaining of hunger. I began thinking of what could be done in a small way, and that was what gave birth to this project,” he said.
The Special Guest of Honour, Mr. Bolaji Gbadamosi, Global President of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, applauded the initiative, describing it as “unique and one of its kind.” He commended the donors for setting a remarkable example and hinted at upcoming projects that would further support the university community.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Sir Eddy Aina, Prof. Olawale Dairo (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development), and Mr. Olukayode Osinuga (Bursar).
The Ojogbon Orchard Park is expected to serve as a sustainable food support system for the university community and visitors, while promoting a culture of generosity and social responsibility.
