Federal Government Adopts Tai Solarin University of Education as Federal University
In a significant development, the Federal Government has adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University.
Established by the Ogun State Government in 2005, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. The institution was named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a renowned activist and founder of Mayflower School in Ikenne.
As a federal institution, TASUED will be the first federally owned tertiary school in the Ogun East senatorial district. Notably, the university’s well-developed infrastructure and academic program require minimal federal investment.
President Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the institution.
President Tinubu viewed the adoption as an opportunity to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education program in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating children and imparting patriotic and leadership values at Mayflower School in Ikenne.
The President also acknowledged the Awujale of Ijebuland’s crucial role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.
Awolowo and Solarin were celebrated figures from the Eastern Senatorial District of Ogun State, encompassing Ijebu and Remo.
President Tinubu emphasized that TASUED’s transition into a Federal University of Education is a strategic step in the Federal Government’s commitment to bolstering teacher education and enhancing the quality of instruction across all educational levels.
