A devastating accident occurred on Kara Bridge in the early hours of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, resulting in the loss of life of a truck driver. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that they received a distress call at 04:26hrs.
According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the agency promptly activated the state’s emergency response plans and team from the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja. Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a truck laden with coils of steel and a 40ft container was involved in the accident.
Investigations revealed that the articulated truck driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to avoid a collision with a 40-foot container on the road. The truck fell on its side, resulting in the discharge of its cargo.
Sadly, an unidentified adult male driver lost his life in the incident. The body had been taken away before the arrival of LASEMA’s response team.
LASEMA has activated necessary safety measures at the scene of the incident and collaborative efforts were made to restore vehicular activities. The road has been cleared for vehicular movement, and recovery operations have been concluded.
The incident has caused significant disruption to traffic in the area, with motorists experiencing intense gridlock. The Lagos State Government has urged commuters to exercise patience and to seek alternative routes where possible.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed the cause of the accident to brake failure by the truck driver. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
In conclusion, the tragic accident on Kara Bridge serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution while on the road.
