The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, has confirmed that the autopsy of Monday Arijo, the SS2 student who died after allegedly receiving 24 strokes of the cane and doing 162 frog jumps as punishment, has been concluded ¹. Arijo, a student of Obada Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, passed away last Friday at the Federal Medical Center in Abeokuta.
The punishment was administered by a teacher over Arijo’s response to a trash can brought to his classroom. This incident led to widespread outrage, prompting the Ogun State Government to shut down the school and arrest and suspend the teacher and principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, for allowing corporal punishment against established rules and regulations.
Commissioner for Education, Abayomi Arigbabu, visited the family on Tuesday to offer condolences and announced that a post-mortem examination would be conducted to determine the cause of Arijo’s death.
Addressing journalists at the state Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, Commissioner Alamutu stated that while the autopsy is complete, and the corpse has been released to the family for burial, further examination is required to obtain all findings.
Alamutu expressed skepticism about reports circulating on social media, labeling them “frivolous.” He assured that a comprehensive update on the investigation would be provided within the next few days.
The incident has sparked concerns about corporal punishment in schools and the need for stricter enforcement of regulations.
