A devastating fuel tanker explosion occurred in Majiya village, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, killing at least 95 people and injuring more than 50 others. The incident happened around 12:30 am on Wednesday when a fuel-laden tanker crashed and subsequently exploded.
According to eyewitnesses, villagers were scooping fuel from the overturned tanker when the explosion ignited, unleashing a massive fireball that ravaged the area. The blast caused severe injuries and fatalities among those present.
DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that the police are currently conducting investigations. “Today (Wednesday) a petrol tanker from Port Harcourt going to Nguru in Yobe state reached Majiya village of Taura local government area at around 12:30 am. The driver lost control at Majiya and fell down,” he explained.
The tanker’s contents flooded gutters and drainages in the village, and villagers started fetching the fuel, unwittingly igniting the explosion. “As a result, 95 people confirmed died, and 50 have been hospitalized, receiving treatment,” Adams added.
The injured are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, while authorities work to identify the victims and provide support to their families. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of ensuring safety protocols are in place to prevent such disasters. Unfortunately, Nigeria has experienced several similar fuel tanker explosions in recent years, resulting in significant loss of life.
The Jigawa State Government has promised to provide assistance to the affected families and support the injured. The government has also launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other emergency responders are on the ground, providing aid and support to the affected community. The agency has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
As the investigation continues, the people of Jigawa State and Nigeria mourn the loss of life and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in this tragic incident.
