The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has moved to address recent misinformation surrounding the reconstruction of the Falomo Police Barracks in Lagos State, reassuring the public of its commitment to providing modern, habitable accommodations for officers.
According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the reconstruction project was initiated under former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and private sector partners through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Current Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to improving officers’ housing during the Nigeria Police Force Housing Summit on April 23-24, 2024. The summit brought together stakeholders to chart a sustainable path toward improved police welfare.
A nationwide assessment revealed alarming statistics: less than 25% of police personnel have access to adequate barracks accommodations, with 90% of existing barracks in severe disrepair. The urgent reconstruction of these facilities is necessary to ensure officers’ safety and well-being.
The NPF has successfully leveraged PPP arrangements to rebuild existing barracks and provide affordable housing for officers, a model adopted globally in police housing initiatives.
Contrary to reports, no officers were forcefully evicted from Falomo Barracks. Occupants received adequate notice, relocation assistance, and compensation of N2,000,000 each to secure alternative accommodation.
“The rebuilding of Falomo Barracks reflects our resolve to provide safe, decent housing for officers, aligning with global standards and safeguarding the future of those who serve,” ACP Adejobi stated.
