The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State Branch, has called for stronger collaboration with the state government and sustained support towards improving the welfare and working conditions of medical practitioners in the state.
The association made the call during a familiarisation visit by its newly elected state officers committee led by its Chairman, Dr. Enimola Sunday, to the Office of the Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, at the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Enimola reaffirmed the commitment of the NMA to constructive engagement with the government, stressing the need for continued dialogue and collaboration to address issues affecting medical practitioners and strengthen healthcare delivery in the state.
The NMA Chairman also commended the Ogun State Government for its role in the implementation of the Professional Allowance Table (PAT) initiative, noting that the state’s achievement received recognition at the recently concluded NMA National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
According to him, Ogun State was recognised as the first among the states to achieve the milestone in the implementation of the initiative.
Enimola further solicited the support of the Head of Service for the activities of the association, particularly the forthcoming NMA Physicians’ Week and other programmes and initiatives planned by the Ogun State Branch.
Responding, the Head of Service, Mr. Olanrewaju Saka, congratulated the newly elected NMA executives and urged them to sustain constructive engagements with the government and other relevant stakeholders.
Saka also called on medical practitioners in the state to remain guided by the oath of saving lives, particularly during periods of agitation over their legitimate demands.
He acknowledged the right of the NMA, like every other association, to advocate for the interests and welfare of its members, but advised that such advocacy should be pursued through lawful, humane and constructive means without endangering the lives of members of the public.
“Guard against allowing emotions or personal interests to interfere with the ethics and oath of the medical profession. As life savers, be guided in your unionism; do not let your actions lead to people’s death. Don’t neglect the patients while fighting for your legitimate rights,” Saka advised.
The Head of Service urged the new NMA leadership to build on the experiences of previous administrations and maintain close consultations with experienced leaders and elders within the profession, particularly the immediate past Chairman, Dr. Luqman Ogunjimi.
He noted that dialogue and experience had contributed to resolving challenges in the past, urging the new leadership to adopt a similar approach in addressing emerging issues.
Saka attributed some of the notable achievements of the present administration in the public service to the leadership style of the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, whom he described as worker-friendly and attentive to the needs of public servants.
He also called for greater collaboration between doctors and other healthcare professionals, urging the NMA to continue to provide responsible leadership within the health sector.
